Mick McMahan Bio (from Bloomberg.com):
Mr. Michael K. McMahan, also known as Mick, is the Founder, General Partner, and Managing Partner at Gaston Capital Partners. Mr. McMahan was a founding member and the first president of the Carolina’s Chapter of the Society of Certified Financial Planners. He founded McMahan and Associates in 1984. He was president and principal of the firm until 2007. Prior to founding McMahan and Associates, Mr. McMahan was a financial advisor for several large financial companies. Mr. McMahan has more than 35 years experience managing investment portfolios and working with small businesses and has successfully managed hundreds of millions of dollars in client assets since 1984. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Vietnam War, where he attained the rank of Captain and was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Air Medal for completion of more than 20 aerial combat assaults into known enemy territory; the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry; the Vietnam Service Medal with Four Battle Stars; and three Army Commendation medals. He also earned the Army’s parachute badge, served in the 82nd Airborne Division, and was an expert marksman with the M-16 and the Colt 45 pistol. Mr. McMahan is the author of four books: A Breach of Faith (1996); Confessions of a Preacher’s Kid (2001); An Act of War (2013) and Saving Hope (spring 2014). He has been listed as a top-ranked Charlotte-area financial advisor by the Charlotte Business Journal and in Barron’s as one of the top 100 independent financial advisers in the country. He is a public speaker who addresses audiences on topics such as financial investment advice, business management, and military service. He holds a B.A. with Honors in Economics and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also completed the Certified Financial Planner program through the College for Financial Planning, Investment Management and Asset Allocation through the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania; and Advanced Estate Planning through the Heckerling Institute at the University of Miami Law School.
